Bede’s School – Maths Block

Judged by Governors, staff and pupils, LCE won an invited limited competition for a 20 classroom facility at the heart of the campus for this well known public school in the Sussex Countryside.

The brief was to provide 20 new generous sized and highly sustainable classrooms over two to three floors on a tight site constrained by existing buildings and mature trees. The change in level across the site allowed for a split level section around an atrium to provide a flexible break-out/extra teaching space/small performance space with the corridors to the first floor classrooms forming a gallery. The configuration of the overall plan is “U” shaped around an open sided courtyard with two mature trees as its centrepiece. The location of this new facility on the campus meant it should have two entrances linked by an internal “street”.
