LCE, with Taylor Woodrow, were one of four selected bidders for this strategic and highly sustainable mixed development in the heart of the City. The brief, topography and location allowed for a contemporary solution, a new organisational framework that created a cohesive townscape that integrated with the urban hinterland and surrounding area, whist having an identifiable quality of its own.

The residential element of the proposals, amounting to 181 one, two and three bedroom apartments, was part of a mixed-use development that included a Library for the University of Brighton and a number of “homes” for Arts and Creative Industries located around various urban squares. The stepped design of these blocks achieved excellent natural light and maximises solar gain, views out and privacy with good amenity space accessible to all.

The Library proposals were the preferred choice of the University but the bid lost out to a competitor that ignored the planning brief, thereby increasing the density, and could therefore offer more for the land. The winning proposals are yet to gain a planning consent.
