Following on from the success of Charters Village, LCE Architects have worked with Retirement Villages on extra care residential accommodation on the outskirts of South Chailey at Gradwell Park. Consent for which was secured at Appeal.
The final scheme comprises 40 bed Extra Care cottages and apartments, Residents’ Club House, central services, 20 room Nursing care wing and 20 room Dementia Care wing.
Great care has been taken to reduce as much as possible all signs associated with institutionalization. Provision of lots of light and natural ventilation, strict adherence to current design best practice, taking on board all the latest research and spatial design recommendations particularly for the Dementia sufferers e.g. new techniques to maximize ease of way finding, use of colour, texture etc, photographs and memory boxes.
The site was formerly part of a Victorian Hospital but had been allowed to become overgrown creating the need for ecologists to take possession of the site to move the protected species who’ve taken up residence prior to any commencement of building works.
The client requested a change to the brief in 2017. A new planning application was submitted and granted for 65 extra-care units. The project is currently on site & under construction.
