The proposed building provides teaching facilities for medical students. It operates as a satellite facility to the existing Medical School buildings at the two Universities in the City and is adjacent to the Mill View Hospital and Hove Polyclinic.
LCE Architects, commissioned by the South Downs NHS Trust and the Brighton and Sussex Universities Medical School, were awarded the contract through the NHS Procure 21 method and designed a responsive building which was then reviewed under AEDET.
A calm, clean, sculptural building design was created, reflecting its academic function and clearly distinguishing it from the more ‘domestic’ style of the patient focused Mill View Hospital, the more civic polyclinic and the child orientated nursery.
It provides a library, lecture and seminar rooms, academic staff offices and meeting rooms. The school is primarily for students undertaking psychiatric studies and practical training at Mill View Hospital, which is situated on the Neville Avenue Campus. The scheme compliments its surroundings by adding a high quality distinctive, contemporary form to the Campus.
The confident elevational design is consistently applied to all faces of the building and creates a pleasing, interesting and timeless three dimensional form.
