LCE Architects were appointed by the five families who purchased Pelham House to advise them on the conversion and refurbishment of the ex-East Sussex council headquarters building into a residential conference centre. The appointment extended to advice on the listed building consent and associated change of use planning, building regulations, building fabric and interior design.

The Design Pelham House is a grade II listed 16th century townhouse with a large 1930’s council chamber extension. The challenge was to create a contemporary, elegant design which was responsive to the historic setting. The facility includes 32 bedrooms, a restaurant and a conference centre consisting of 9 meeting rooms with a range of capacities from 2 to 180 people. The original council chamber has been converted into a 180 capacity theatre style room on two tiers for lectures. In addition, it can also be used for dinners and social events, with the panelled room, which boasts the original Elizabethan oak panelling, being used by the hotel guests as a lounge.
